This is probably a newbie question, but what does 'muted' mean?

Fair question.

This is where you dampen the guitar strings at the bridge with your right hand (palm) whilst playing notes or chords. A lot of bands use a muted rhythm guitar for the verses and then open (not muted) to break through into the chorus. Now its on is a really good example of this: both rhythm and lead (right and left) are muted in the first verse and then just before 0:50 the rhythm guitar is opened up.

Play around to try and get the same effect using your right hand to mute the strings, or look for something on youtube (I'd do it for you but youtube hates my computer this week).
I has a PhD.

My next effort has been:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhAyZbR3A8Q

I've got most of this down, except for that hammer-on in the middle of the C cord. And one of the cords appears to be (XX3210) or (X33210) which I have been calling a F/e, since it's fingered a lot like an F cord. It's the middle cord in the centeral G, F/e, and Am progression that's repeated.

I'd also like to get acoustic guitar versions of Jed's Other Poem and Warming Sun.
