Piano chords for Somewhere There's A Someone, anyone?

Postby mtf2382 on Mon Dec 17, 2012 3:36 pm

Anyone worked out the piano chords for Somewhere There's A Someone? What a great song. I've tried watching the video and getting as much from that as I could, but am not really a pianist, so having trouble. Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Agreed, this song and the recording of it are fantastic!
This is what I came up with from watching the video and using my ears.
Like someone mentioned in another thread, Jason uses a lot of inverted triads. Also major sevenths.
The verse:
F bass + C-F-A (F)
Write my
C bass + C-E-B (Cmaj7) then C-E-C (C)
name
F bass + C-F-A (F)
on a
C bass + C-E-B (Cmaj7) then C-E-G (C)
map
F bass + C-F-A (F)
and ask the
C bass + C-E-B (Cmaj7)
ranger
C bass + C-E-C (C)
where I'm
G bass + D-G-B (G)
at
etc.
On the last line of the verse I play a G7, G bass + D-F-G-B, then
the B climbs up to C, D, and E for the first chord of the chorus, while the bass climbs up to A, B then back down to C for the first chord of the chorus
The chorus:
C bass + G-C-E (C)
Somewhere there's a
F bass + F-A-E (Fmaj7)
some
F bass + F-A-C (F)
one
A bass + E-A-C (Am)
who's
G bass + E-G-B (Em)
wondering where I
F bass + C-F-A (F)
am
then a transition chord: F bass + C-G (C) or something like that.
etc
On the last line of chorus stay on the F
That should get you started. The intro is just the first part of the verse.
Cheers!

You're welcome! How did it come out sounding?
I realized from watching the video of Jason playing it on WFUV that the second bass note in the verse should be an E, not a C, so the bass in the verse actually goes F-E-F-C-F-C-G .
There's also that cool G-F#-F thing in the break before the second verse where everything just moves down by half-steps. It's fun to play!
I'm psyched Jason's coming back to SF next month, so I can see him play it again!
